Sri Karunamayi Charitable Hospital
Sri Karunamayi Charitable Hospital was established by SMVA Trust in 2002 to provide free and quality medical care to a community in dire need. The hospital has served over 600,000 patients across the remote regions surrounding the Rapur Mandal in the Nellore District of Andhra Pradesh, India. Through the Sri Karunamayi Charitable Hospital, the SMVA Trust has been able to provide vital medical care to a community of about 500,000 people living in the rural regions of the Nellore District, Andhra Pradesh.
Promoting the well-being and health of the local population, those who are vulnerable and underprivileged.
Prior to the hospital's opening, a simple injury could result in the loss of an arm or leg, and mothers would pass away during their child’s birth due to the lack of proper sanitary conditions and emergency medical care. The members of these marginalized neighborhoods often had to face the agonizing choice of whether to pay for desperately needed medicines or to buy food.
Today, the Sri Karunamayi Charitable Hospital and the dedicated doctors, nurses, and volunteers who serve there provide a variety of medical specialties, including orthopedics, dentistry, radiology, cardiology, ENT, and OB/GYN.
The hospital staff also offers personal and community education, enabling people to take charge of their lives and their futures. The Sri Karunamayi Charitable Hospital has been instrumental in promoting the well-being and health of the local population, particularly those who are vulnerable and underprivileged.
Dentistry
The Hospital not only provides medical care but also free dentistry services to the community in need. Patients can receive routine dental examinations and treatments such as fillings and root canals at no cost. On average, dentists see between 50-100 patients each day, and this number can soar well into the hundreds during health fairs or "medical camps," as they are known locally. By offering free dental care, the hospital is promoting overall health and well-being in the community.
From as early as 1996, SMVA Trust has been committed to restoring vision to people suffering from cataract-related blindness in the Nellore District. To date thousands of individuals have received life-changing surgery free of cost, enabling them to continue functioning in their daily lives and society. Through this initiative, SMVA Trust has helped to restore hope and enable them to continue functioning in their daily lives and society.
Ophthalmology and Vision Restoration
Food awareness
Through the food awareness campaign, SMVA Trust has worked to educate people about the benefits of consuming fresh, locally-sourced fruits and vegetables, as well as the importance of whole grains, legumes, and other traditional foods.
In addition, the campaign has encouraged people to avoid processed and packaged foods that are often high in sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats.
Doctors and healthcare professionals have also played a key role in promoting healthy food choices. By educating patients about the importance of a healthy diet and providing recommendations for healthy food choices, doctors have helped to prevent and manage a range of diet-related health problems.
Physical Therapy
In addition to providing physical mobility aids, like tricycles, the Sri Karunamayi Free Hospital offers physical therapy to patients in need. Many people in the region suffer from joint pains and/or arthritis and have experienced a decline in productivity in their lives. When treatment is combined with physical therapy, patients can maintain an active lifestyle. Physical therapy especially benefits individuals recovering from an injury or surgery, allowing them to continue to be self-reliant, contributing members of society.
