Through SMVA, families in need are gifted with new homes that provide safety, shelter, and dignity. Enclosed bathrooms provide a safe environment for women and girls. By addressing basic needs, SMVA is helping to build a brighter future for communities in need.

Providing Shelter, Safety, and Comfort

Our mission is to provide new homes to families in need, each featuring a kitchen, common room, attached locking bathroom, and veranda. We have already gifted thousands of homes to families living below the poverty line, and our efforts are ongoing. We believe that every person deserves the comfort and safety of a secure home, and our housing project has brought security to people across four villages in the region.

Through SMVA new homes are gifted to families in need. Each home features a kitchen, common room, attached locking bathroom, and veranda. In Andhra Pradesh, South India, millions of people live in the remote regions of the state, located in villages outside of metropolitan areas, and removed from modern living.

Countless families struggle to lead a life in simple thatched huts or dilapidated constructions that are not capable of sheltering them from the area’s extreme weather conditions or indigenous wildlife.

Amma says, “This is simply no way to live. We must help them.”

Since its inception in 2009, Amma’s housing project has brought the shelter, safety, and comfort of a new home to thousands of people who live below the poverty line.

Augmenting Infrastructure for Improved Connectivity

The first to benefit from this project were entire communities of people that were displaced by the construction of a dam in the Nellore District of Andhra Pradesh. Since then, the housing project has brought security to people across four villages in the region. In addition to the homes themselves, in many instances, SMVA augments the infrastructure in these villages, something that enables connectivity with others and can improve the local economy. In many cases roads, lighting, and water have also been brought to villages. As with all of Sri Karunamayi’s humanitarian efforts, the housing projects provide for people regardless of their beliefs, social standing, or gender and currently serve the local Hindu, Christian, and Muslim faiths.

Safety and Dignity for Women and Girls

An overwhelming percentage of the women in rural India do not have access to an enclosed, safe bathroom. Unfortunately, these women are forced to wait until the cover of nightfall to relieve themselves or to bathe outside in nature. For many, this is a frightening and shameful experience.

Amma says, “Our women and girls need to be safe in their homes, safe in their working places, and safe in their communities.”

To put an end to this appalling situation, and for the safety and dignity of women and girls, the new homes provided by SMVA feature enclosed bathrooms with locking doors. The home shown below (in the final phases of construction) is from the Gonupalli village, located in the Rapur Mandal of Andhra Pradesh, India.
